Multi-Touch Air Hockey on a 103-inch Plasma?

Are you into air hockey? If so, then you are aware that a typical air hockey table consists of a large smooth playing surface, a surrounding rail to prevent the puck and mallets from leaving the table, and slots in the rail at either end of the table that serve as goals. On the ends of the table, behind and below the goals, there is usually a puck return.

What you are looking at above is an air-hockey table. But wait, it’s not just an ordinary air hockey table; it’s a multi-touch air hockey table. A start-up arcade would definitely need this as a center of action. First previewed at the Integrated Systems Europe 2009 show in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago, this Multi-Touch Air Hockey is a project between Panasonic and U-Touch. The hardware tweak came from U-Touch and the software was built by London-based Uicentric.

Panasonic finds it hard to sell off its $70,000 television because of the tough economy. So they came up with this idea – to turn its 103-inch television into a multi-touch touchscreen air hockey table. Although it still has some kinks, it would still look cool to air hockey aficionados. Not on sale yet, the Panasonic Multi-Touch Air Hockey is only for conferences and corporate events at the moment.

Gamers Get Punched

Gamers are all used to controllers now that employ force feedback and DualShock vibrate technology. With every rumble and bang, your controller gives you the haptics feedback of every computer-generated carnage. There are even gamer paraphernalia right now that mimics the recoil of machine guns. Though high-end graphics and realistic vibrations are being employed in every console available today, this has not been enough to give gamers the true experience of combat.gaming-vest1

Presenting, the vest with a punch! TN Games has developed the 3rd Space Gaming Vest. This vest is an impact-generating gear that gives hardcore gamers realistic combat experience. Connecting directly via USB, and compatible with 20 games, the wearer gets to feel every hit and blow that their 3D avatars receive in-game. This lightweight vest was originally created for military and medical training. Now it’s available to consumers for the sheer joy of a more realistic gameplay. Gamers don’t mind getting beaten up, as long as it’s in the comfort of their living room and not in a bloodbath in a deserted parking lot. This full-impact gaming accessory boasts of 8 numeric impact shells, both front and back. These are activated every time your game avatar receives a punch, blow, or shot.

The 3rd Space Gaming Vests comes in 3 different colors. Girl gamers need not feel left out either because this accessory comes in pink. Now the only thing missing is a haptics helmet that can allow gamers to feel the power of an uppercut.

Shock Feedback Gaming

Is a rumbling gamepad too boring for you? Well then, prepare to get shocked for this new “shock” feedback in town.  Mindwire Introduced it’s new shock-delivered feedback system that delivers small amounts of electrical “shocks” in place of the conventional force feedback “rumbles”.  The V-5 as it is called, delivers muscle stimulating electrical shocks sent directly to the skin in place of force feedbacks.  So whenever your opponent in a fighting game punches your character, the V-5 has enough “ouch” factor but safe enough to stay alive – literally.

The device works just like a muscle toning devices.  The device gives out short snaps of electricity directly to the skins through the adhesive pads that are put directly to the skin.  These snaps of electricity are based on the normal force feedback available now in popular games. Apart from the shock feedback in-game, the player can also opt to lower the shock level if it makes it difficult to even finish the game.   Now, getting hit by your opponent does not only nudge your controller, but it instead the player will feel electrical shocks on different parts of his or her body.

The kit comes with the self-adhesive tapes that players stick on to themselves while playing their favourite games.  Compatibility in games are not yet fully implemented as to some games are still under “development”.  Mindwire has not confirmed that all force feedback games are compatible with their shocking device however, some games might work, but some might not.

As a word of precaution, if you plan on buying these for fun, don’t forget to review this diagram below for your safety. Cheers :D
